GeriActors was founded at SAGE (Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton) in 2001, by David Barnet, a professor in the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta. In 2007, the company became intergenerational when University students were integrated with the seniors. This created a new cross-generational sense of community with a heightened level of playfulness. Plays became focused on aging rather than age, and celebrated commonalities between seniors and students. The company adopted its current name, GeriActors & Friends.
To support their participational and leadership roles with the company, undergraduate and graduate students take a course in intergenerational theatre at the University of Alberta. For more information on the University of Alberta Intergenerational Theatre course, click here.
Since 2009, GeriActors have offered outreach theatre programs for seniors throughout Edmonton. For more information click here.
love working with the Friends because we are so busy saying
at our age, that it’s nice to
say hello to people that come to see us."
